Hydro Cooling

Hydro Cooling is the process or technique of halting the ripening of fruits and vegetables after harvesting by immersion in ice or cold water. The hydrocooler rapidly cools produce in comparison to other methods of cooling, for the ultimate results, the water must be kept to near-freezing temperatures.

Hydro Cooling makes a great introductory method to remove the field heat from the produce and is very efficient in terms of cooling time. By chilling the produce immediately after harvest, hydrocoolers combat the factors influencing field heat, external factors and the plants respiration rate.

A hydrocooler produces chilled water and then moves this water into contact with the produce. Subsequently, a pump moves chilled water to cool warm produce, which is then re-cooled to be used again.

There are various types of Hydrocoolers in terms of how they can be utilised, Hydrocoolers that transfer produce on a conveyor and pass it through a Hydrocooler where they are sorted and packed in a production facility after passing through the hydrocooler, the volume of product to be processed per hour determines which option is viable.

Cold Logic has designed and installed Hydrocoolers ranging up to 50 Tonnes/hr.

The proper use of hydrocooling techniques can work to reduce the following deterioration issues:

Softening: Keeps your veggies from getting squishy by suppressing enzymatic degradation and respiratory activity.

Wilting: Hydrocooling maintains perky and succulent produce by slowing water loss.

Mould and Bacteria: Keep produce edible for longer by slowing the growth of micro-organisms with a hydrocooler.

The designs of Hydro Cooling solutions ColdLogic offers are:

Throughput Bin Hydrocoolers: Produce is conveyed through the Hydro-cooler. Typically, this type of Hydro cooler has a feed in end and a feed out end for the purposes of throughput.

Standalone Hydrocoolers: Has a PVC type door that opens to expose pallet rails within the chamber. Individual pallets or bins are loaded into each slot. This type of Hydro-cooler can be constructed to accommodate a number of pallets/bins per unit, from one slot to any combination that may be required.

Portable Hydrocoolers: Fully self-contained, these units are on a common skid with all the refrigeration, electrical and controls within the skid, all that is required for use is power and water. Hydro-coolers in this form allow a grower who may have farms in different locations with different harvesting times to redeploy units. This type of hydrocoolers generally suit two pallet/bins slots.
