FAQ By Role
CEO
How can a refrigeration company help me grow my company?
Cold Logic sees itself as not just a contractor or service agent but as a business partner. Refrigeration and temperature control forms a critical input to many industries particularly with regards to product quality, food safety and shelf life.
Cold Logic has successfully worked with CEO’s and senior management on achieving business goals of expansion and new facilities where refrigeration can be the major energy user and a critical element to project success.
If you have a major expansion project, new product line or looking to complete a significant upgrade to your facility, it would be worth discussing your plans confidentially to us and see how over the last 35 years we have helped some leading Australian brands successfully grow.
How will quality refrigeration protect my business and our brand?
A robust and effective refrigeration plant must be able to deal with a broad range of heat loads and most importantly, cater for peak product loads at warmest days of the year. Depending on the risk profile of your business you may need redundancy in your refrigeration equipment to cater for routine servicing or breakdown.
It is worth considering what each hour of down time will cost the organization should operation or manufacturing have to stop due to a refrigeration outage. What's your risk mitigation plan?
Cold Logic has worked with hundreds of clients to look at operational and safety risks with their refrigeration plant and implement plans over a set time period to address. Cold Logic is experts at putting together high level broad strategies and budgets to make assessments on risks and return.
Quality control and critical temperatures go hand in hand. Refrigeration can be the difference to success or failure particularly when dealing with food, beverage and pharmaceutical. If you feel that this is an area of concern then talk to us.
Can refrigeration give us a competitive advantage?
In many ways the effectiveness of your inputs create the success of your outputs. If your refrigeration can improve pull down times of temperature of product, you can push more product through with better asset utilisation and improve return on operations (ROO). In other words, reducing overall input cost by minimising energy consumption while improving efficiency of refrigeration such as heat reclaim.
The way you can do this is implementing new technology and better product designs. These implementations can reduce overall input cost by minimising energy consumption, improving efficiency of refrigeration, heat reclaim and even reduce/replace use of fossil fuels.
We are more than happy to share what we are doing in this technology space. Talk to us about Low Charge DX Ammonia, plate freezing and heat pump/ waste heat recovery.
The challenge in a fast moving economy is that it is driven by technology. Are you ahead of the curve?
Rising energy costs have become a major concern for our business? How can Cold Logic improve our energy use
Did you know refrigeration can be anywhere between 30-85% of a facilities annual energy use?
Are you managing your energy costs as best as you can be? Its worth having the conversation with us.
Refrigeration is essentially capturing heat (energy) and moving it to somewhere else (often atmosphere). How much energy and heat your moving will determine how much electricity your using.
We have intimate knowledge of making the best use of it. Our expertise is in better automation and controls of refrigeration. A 1-3% improvement in controls and refrigeration operation can translate into a 1-3% improvement in energy efficiency. Doesn’t sound like a lot?
For many companies, total energy bills can be in the many $100K’s to millions. Each dollar of efficiency gain here falls straight to the bottom line.
What can Cold Logic offer us to become future proof while being green and energy efficient?
Our firm belief is that for most mid to large scale operations - Ammonia is the future in Australia. It is 100% green, with zero global warming potential and zero Ozone Depleting potential. It is also one of the most efficient refrigerant gases you can get.
As an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and systems integrator – we are helping Australian industry navigate their way through high energy costs and the current phase down of harmful HFC gases.
There has been a lot of developments with Ammonia systems, making them more compact, lower in total charge and safer to operate than many tracitional ammonia systems.

By utilising a quality refrigeration partner such as Cold Logic, we can use our 35 years in business to give un-bias advice on plant upgrades, equipment replacement or service intervals to maximise WOL.
You want to know that your company is spending money most effectively for the shareholder return. We can give advise on what assets can need careful planning and risk mitigation (ie in some cases refrigeration compressors can be $50-$100K replacements). Do you complete appropriate rebuilds or run to fail.
We can give you the honest answers.
How can spending more on preventative maintenance reduce our total yearly spend?
We have many case studies where we have significantly increased the yearly spend on preventative maintenance and as a result reduced their total maintenance expenditure by dramatically reducing the breakdown spend. Cold Logic has seen a 20% reduction in total maintenance expenditure by adopting this method.
The true cost savings could be higher when taking into account the lost production during unplanned downtime of refrigeration and thus operations.
We are more than happy to share these case studies with you and your team.
General Manager/ Operations
Without refrigeration our operations stop? How do we reduce the possibility of down time to our refrigeration plant?
The majority of Cold Logic’s clients have operations where refrigeration is critical.
We work with senior management to assess how the business operates and key processes where refrigeration may possess a risk to down time. Cold Logic will then present options to our clients to mitigate this risk of down time. This could include critical spares, integration of duty/standby equipment, increased preventative maintenance or even remote alarms and monitoring.

Engineering
What new technologies are you offering to your clients?
While the physics of refrigeration haven’t changed over the past few decades – there has been significant technology advancement in energy efficiency, controls and automation.
We are talking with plenty of clients on Thermosyphon oil cooling, floating head pressure control and optimized smart plants with the aim to achieve 3-8% better efficiency out of your ammonia refrigeration plant. For certain applications low charge DX ammonia can provide superior energy savings and benefits of lower ammonia charge.
When it comes to HFC/ freon technology, we see CO2 having an impact as the technology has improved in trans-critical systems.
Cold Logic also has a partnership with Yanmar Australia to provide natural gas powered chillers allowing customers to almost operate off-grid for their refrigeration. These options include chilled water or low temperature glycol. There is even a LPG gas option for these chillers should natural gas not be available onsite.
We have an aging refrigeration plant that is causing frequent breakdowns and downtime to the facility. Has Cold Logic got experience in live plant upgrades?
Upgrades to live operating plants can be challenging due to many variables and risks at any given time. We love these challenges – in fact we prefer these over the simple projects. We thrive in this environment and have long list of successful projects and happy clients.
Examples of this are, Thomas Foods Boning Room and refrigeration upgrade which included new lamb chillers. This upgrade was completed in live operation, with minimal downtime and no lost production. Talk to us about case studies such as these and your specific situation.
Should we be concerned with the HFC phase down on high GWP refrigerants if we use these on our facility?
Yes – the Australian government has made a commitment to a phase down the importation of HFC (Hydrofluorocarbon) gases and commenced this phase down on January 1, 2018. Each year they will gradually reduce HFC imports to 15% of current quotas with full effect as of 2036. This phase down is already 3 years ahead in Europe and has already seen significant rises in the price of phased down gases such as R134a, R407C, R410a and R407F. We are already seeing the same price rises in Australia as supply are reduced.
Alternative drop in gases are now hitting the market, with pricing higher than original HFC gas prices and they still have shortcomings. These include the new blends having low components of phased out gases, meaning they will still need to be replaced. Other issues are in the event of a small leak – the gas blends will escape at different rates, meaning performance will be affected and there is no testing to be able to determine which blend has been lost. This can end in costly full recharging of the system.
Cold Logic can mitigate these by discussing alternative refrigeration solutions and manage the risk to operating cost and operation.
